Free Online CSV Sorter

A CSV file stores tabular data as plain text, with each line representing a row and commas (or another delimiter) separating the columns. Sorting that data by hand in a text editor is slow and error-prone, especially once a file has more than a few dozen rows. This CSV Sorter lets you upload or paste a CSV, choose the column and sort order you want, and get back a correctly sorted file — with every row kept intact and every column staying aligned with the row it belongs to.

The tool supports alphabetical, numeric, and date sorting, along with language-aware ordering for CSV files that contain Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Hindi, or other non-English text. Because everything runs in your browser, your data is never sent anywhere to be sorted.

How to Sort a CSV File

  1. Upload or paste your CSV. Use the Upload CSV button to choose a file, drag a file onto the drop zone, or click Paste Data to type or paste rows directly.
  2. Choose the column. Once your data loads, pick which column to sort by from the Sort by menu. Column names are read from the first row if "First row contains headers" is checked.
  3. Select your sorting options. Pick ascending or descending order, and a sort type — Automatic, Text, Numeric, or Date. Optionally set a language for the comparison and decide how empty cells and case sensitivity should be handled.
  4. Sort your data. Click Sort CSV. The entire dataset is reordered by the chosen column while keeping every row's other values together.
  5. Download the sorted CSV. Use Download CSV to save the result, or Copy CSV to copy it straight to your clipboard.

CSV Sorting Features

  • Sort by any column, in ascending or descending order
  • Automatic, text, numeric, and date sorting modes
  • Natural sorting, so "Item 2" comes before "Item 10"
  • Language-aware sorting using Unicode collation, not plain ASCII order

  • Automatic or manual delimiter detection (comma, semicolon, tab, pipe)
  • Full support for quoted fields, embedded commas, and escaped quotes

Sort CSV Data by Column, Not Just One Field

When you sort by a column, this tool reorders whole rows rather than shuffling individual cells. If you sort a customer list by Age, each person's name and country travel with their age to the new position — nothing gets mismatched or split apart.

Sort CSV Files in Different Languages

CSV files often contain names, addresses, or labels in more than one writing system. Plain ASCII sorting treats accented letters, Arabic script, Cyrillic, or CJK characters inconsistently, which can produce an order that looks wrong to a native reader. This tool uses the browser's built-in Unicode collation to compare text the way a person reading that language actually would, and it supports Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hebrew, and other right-to-left scripts without reversing or corrupting the text. You can also pick a specific language from the Language menu — including English, Arabic, French, German, Spanish, Turkish, Russian, Persian, Urdu, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Nordic languages, Greek, Hebrew, Indonesian, Malay, Swahili, and Somali — or leave it on Auto.

Privacy and Security

Your CSV is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to our server. Parsing, sorting, and generating the downloadable file all happen on your device using JavaScript. Uploaded content is still treated as untrusted data — cell values are inserted into the preview as plain text, never as raw HTML, so a stray formula-like value in your CSV can't run as code on this page. If you plan to open the sorted file in spreadsheet software, be aware that cells starting with characters like =, +, -, or @ can be interpreted as formulas by that software — this is a general spreadsheet behavior, not something this tool adds or removes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CSV Sorter?

A CSV Sorter is a tool that reorders the rows of a CSV file based on the values in one column, while keeping the rest of each row intact. This tool does that directly in your browser, with options for alphabetical, numeric, date, and language-aware sorting.

How do I sort a CSV file?

Upload or paste your CSV data, choose the column to sort by, pick an order and sort type, then click Sort CSV. You can then copy or download the sorted result.

Can I sort a CSV by a specific column?

Yes. Once your data loads, the Sort by menu lists every column so you can choose exactly which one to sort by.

Can I sort CSV data alphabetically?

Yes. Choose Text as the sort type, or leave it on Automatic and the tool will detect alphabetical data on its own. Sorting uses Unicode-aware comparison rather than simple ASCII order.

Can I sort numbers correctly in a CSV?

Yes. Numeric sorting compares values as actual numbers, so 2, 10, and 100 sort in that order rather than being sorted as text.

Can I sort CSV files containing Arabic or other languages?

Yes. The sorting engine uses locale-aware Unicode collation and supports Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Urdu, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Russian, and many other languages, including right-to-left text.

Is the CSV Sorter free to use?

Yes, this CSV Sorter is free to use directly in your browser.

Are my CSV files uploaded to a server?

No. Parsing and sorting happen locally in your browser. Your CSV content is not transmitted to an external server as part of the sorting process.

Can I sort a large CSV file?

The tool is built to handle sizeable files efficiently, though the practical limit depends on your browser and device memory. For very large files, only the first rows are shown in the preview, but the full dataset is included when you copy or download the sorted CSV.

Can I download the sorted CSV?

Yes. Use the Download CSV button to save the sorted data as a new .csv file, or Copy CSV to copy it to your clipboard.
